Yep, as the picture says avocado and I are serious about each other, hehehe avocado completes me, I use it where ever and how ever I can and my body loves it, however we have shared an on again off again love/hate kinda relationship for some time.

It all started way back when I went on my first elimination diet, it was a fat counting diet that allowed me and my growing body to only have 20grams of fat a day, So naturally I began to count fat grams left right and centre to restrict the fat consumption, so goodbye Avocado, goodbye all the other healthy good fats our body needs and helloooooo fat free, processed packaged diet foods that had 97%fat free labeled on the packaging. I lost a few kilos which I was stoked about, I thought yay here's the answer I was looking for, but then the health issues started, hormonal imbalances, super dry hair and skin, tummy issues and worst still the mental issues that followed.

I developed are "fat phobia" and wouldn't consume anything that contained fat, It consumed me I found I couldn't socialise a lot and going out to dinner with friends was a no no, I couldn't control how much oil etc was in the foods so instead I just wouldn't go. I had to count the fat grams of everything I ate and I would portion everything I'd consumed into little snack bags obsessing over, did I put to much fat in one bag? What if I consumed more than 20grams today!!! One word comes to mind when I read this! INSANITY!!!!! But it was my reality for a long time and naturally it was too hard to maintain so eventually I went back to my normal eating ways and worse and I found an extra 60kgs on the way.

This is why I hate diets, I hate calorie, fat etc counting and I hate that we are all still willing to put our health at serious risk in order to be skinny!!! The benefits of eating good fats are endless and yes although to lose weight you still need to be aware of how much fat you consume but things like nuts, seeds, coconut/coconut oil, avocado & eggs are essential for our bodies. My focus today is going to be on my bestie Avocado.

Sweet or savoury avocado is my go to ingredient in so many of my creations, not only because they taste amazing with a smooth and creamy texture avocados are jam packed with awesomeness!! They are nutrient packed, contain fibre and potassium, they help to aid digestion, gives you healthy glowing skin, they help to lower bad cholesterol and are wonderful for healthy heart function and my ultimate favourite is............ they actually assist in weight loss, yep you read right, this high in calorie and fat fruit helps with weight loss, the monounsaturated fats found in avocados are used as a slow burning energy source unlike saturated fats, and they improve nutrient absorption which can help you to feel full and reduce hunger. I could go on and on about how awesome avocados are but I think you get a general feel of how important they are even though they are higher in fat.

I can happily say my love for good fat's is here to stay and the days of restricting or eliminating things that are so beneficial for my body to get skinny are long gone.

This is why I find calorie and fat counting not the best choice for weight loss and wellness, it creates food phobias and it can create a negative association with particular foods and cause you to eliminate entire food groups that are so wonderful for your body, it all comes back to balance and moderation, certainly not restriction and elimination, eat whole, real foods and nourish don't punish your body xx
